TRIP NOTES:
Originally Scheduled Site: PROTEUS
Actual Site: PROTEUS
Divers: Joe, Gary, Bob and Paul
Weather Conditions: cloudy and N-NE breeze
Sea Conditions: following sea out to the Proteus; tough, slow slog back in - particularly from the Proteus to the Dixie Arrow
Proteus stern — rudder and propeller
Bob approaches the steering quadrant
DIVE #1 DESCRIPTION:
Maximum Depth: 124 ft
Current: slight at surface; slight from stern to bow from starboard to port sides - reverse of usual Proteus current
Visibility: 50-60 ft on bottom
Water temperature: low 70s on bottom; mid 70s on top
Description: First dive for 2005. Anchored near engine and boilers. Current was running opposite of the usual direction — across from the starboard rather than from the port side of the wreck. The viz was good, but the overcast skies made the water appear darker than the viz actually was. Large numbers of sharks were reported on the bow end of the wreck.
DIVE #2 DESCRIPTION:
Site: DIXIE ARROW
Maximum Depth: xx ft.
Current: slight; slight to medium on bottom
Visibility: 30 ft on bottom; 40-60 ft in mid water
Water temperature: mid 70s on top; low 70s on bottom
Description: A bumpy, slow trip from the Proteus to the Dixie Arrow as the NE wind was increasing during the day. We anchored just forward of the boilers. Thermocline at about 60 ft and viz dropped to 30 feet.
